Whenever I'm making a decision that's difficult or my head isn't clear enough to think about something properly, I draw a 2x2 table in my mind.
The left column is the worst conceivable thing that can happen as a direct result of me doing or not doing the thing.
The right column is the best conceivable thing that can happen as a direct result of me doing or not doing the thing.
In most cases, three of the four cells are identical.
At that point, it's just a decision of whether the odd cell out is better or worse than what the other cells have in them.
